FAQS

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO PLACE MY ORDER?

As a small home business, there is a limit to how many cakes we can make in a week. This is especially true when it comes to wedding cakes due to their size and intricacy. When it comes to weddings it is never too early to drop us a line in order to avoid disappointment. We can normally work with a month's notice or occasionally less for a special occasion cake but again, if you know you want a cake from us then it is never to early to get in touch. We ask for a £50 deposit to secure the date for a wedding cake and £10 for a special occasion cake. Once the deposit is paid your cake is guaranteed. Design details can always be pinned down closer to the event so please do contact us even if you are not yet sure what you want.

DO YOU OFFER CONSULTATIONS?

Yes indeed. Consultations take place at my home in Catford, South East London. I would always recommend a consultation for a wedding cake as we try to make sure that every cake is as unique as you are. The consultation gives you an opportunity not only to taste the cake flavours but also allows me to get to know you and all the fabulousness that you have planned for your wedding day. It is very helpful if you are able to bring along anything that you are using for inspiration e.g. magazine cuttings, pinterest boards, fabric, ribbons etc. Some couples come with a fully formed cake design in mind and others come just knowing they want a cake - both are fine. If you need guidance then I will be more than happy to take you through all the options and possibilities. I would always rather create something that is uniquely yours than copy another cake designer's work but if you have seen a cake you completely love and you can't go to the designer due to location etc. then I am happy to look at the picture and see if I can design something with a similar feel. Consultations take around an hour and are free of charge. I set aside specific weekend dates for consultations but if we cannot find a mutually convenient time for you then I will always try to find a slot that will work. If you are unable to attend a consultation then I am always happy to discuss the cake over the phone or via email and samples can be posted for a small charge. If you are in South East London then, depending on availability, I can sometimes come to you, armed with cake naturally. I can have up to four of my flavours ready for the tasting - just let me know in advance which are making your mouths water most.

DO YOU DELIVER?

Absolutely. For wedding cakes I prefer to personally deliver and set up your cake on the day to ensure that it arrives safely and is displayed beautifully. I can deliver wedding cakes within London, and most of the South East of England. If you do want to collect and transport your cake yourself then you are very welcome to collect from us and we will package it securely for its journey but we cannot be held responsible for any damage the cake may incur once it has left our kitchen. Delivery within Lewisham and the neighbouring boroughs is free of charge. Additional mileage will be quoted for. Should you want to collect and transport your cake yourselves the cake will be supplied in a sturdy box but please be aware that we cannot be held responsible for any damage the cake might incur once it has left our kitchen.

WHAT FINISH WILL MY CAKE HAVE?

We offer several finishes for our cakes.

If you want a super clean finish with sharp edges then the obvious choice is sugarpaste. We can colour it to suit any theme and it makes a particularly good backdrop for sugar flowers. When we cover a cake in sugarpaste we always use ganache underneath (white or dark chocolate depending on flavour) to ensure a flawless finish.

Increasingly popular though are our buttercream covered cakes and we love making them. Buttercream allows for a variety of textures and, of course, tastes delicious. We usually use a classic whipped buttercream for its stability when covering cakes and Swiss meringue buttercream as a filling.

We can also cover cakes in chocolate ganache, either smooth or whipped and textured.

Of course you can also go naked or semi-naked.

CAN I HIRE ONE OF YOUR STANDS?

Yes you can. We are always adding to our collection of footed stands and can show you a selection when you come to your consultation. The hire charge is £10 with a £70 refundable breakages deposit. Where possible we ask that stands are returned on the Monday or the Tuesday following the wedding. We understand that in some circumstances this may not be possible so a later return is sometimes possible by arrangement if the stand is not needed by another couple. Alternatively we can collect for a small charge.

CAN YOU ADD DUMMY TIERS?

Dummy (polystyrene on the inside) tiers can be incorporated to add height to a cake which can be a good solution if you want the impact of a large, tall cake but only want to serve a small number of guests. As a good deal of the cost of a cake is in the decoration it does not reduce the price of that tier dramatically but it will save a little on a real cake tier. Quotes are available on request.
